How do I start an online course?
To get started successfully in an online course you need to do three things at least one week before your first class begins:
Remember that online classes follow a schedule just like a face to face class so you will have assignments due on specific dates. Even if you do not have a required book or piece of material on the first day of class, it's important to log in and get started during the first day or two of the course. Many instructors post assignments that don't require a textbook during the first week so that you can get started without having to wait if there is some delay with your textbook. |
Why can't I access Blackboard?
|
There may be multiple reasons to why you cannot access Blackboard (note: Blackboard is unavailable from 3:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m. every Friday due to scheduled maintenance). Here are some reasons why you may not be able to access Blackboard:
|
I am registered for a class, but it does not appear in Blackboard. What do I do?
| Classes do not appear in your Blackboard account until the official start date of that course. To view the official start date for your class please log in to Campus Connect and view your student schedule. You will see the start and end dates on your schedule. If the start date has already passed and the course is not listed in Blackboard, please contact the helpdesk. |
I have old classes that appear in Blackboard. Can I remove those?
| Yes. On the My Institution tab in Blackboard, click the pencil icon at the top of the My Courses box. Uncheck the display box next to any courses you do not wish to see anymore. |
I logged into my class and there is no information in my class. What should I do?
| Please contact your instructor to find out when information will be posted. Ivy Tech faculty are asked to respond to email questions within 48 hours so please allow time for the faculty member to respond to your question. You may also contact distance education staff on your campus or the helpdesk for assistance in resolving these types of issues. |
How do I purchase my books for my online class?
|
Books for all online classes can be purchased at the Follett online bookstore. |
Can I purchase books online for my traditional classes? If yes, how?
|
Books for traditional classes can be purchased at the Follett online bookstore. |
I ordered my textbook, but it hasn’t arrive yet. What should I do?
| Log in to your class in the first week of the course and review the syllabus and calendar, read announcements, and follow instructions posted there. Most faculty members teaching an online class provide activities that you can do even if your textbooks have not arrived yet. |
My class is not showing up in Blackboard.
| In most cases this is because the class has not started yet. Some 4, 8, 10, and 12 week courses do not begin until after the semester starts. You will not be able to see these courses in Blackboard until the first day of class. This is the same for 16-week courses. You will not be able to view them in Blackboard until the first day of the semester. |
My class was there before but now it's gone.
| This can be caused by a payment issue or the class was closed because of low enrollment. You will need to contact your regional registrar. |
|

Why do I get an "invalid file error" when I try to upload my assignment
| Be sure the file type you are trying to upload is an MS Office file (ie. doc, ppt, pps, xls) or rich text format (rtf). If this is the case, and you are using Internet Explorer. Try using Firefox instead to access Blackboard and upload your assignment. To download Firefox, click here. |
